Brief 1: Cannes Logo Design

In order to maintain the festival's traditional aspects, I wanted the logo to be made up of type which spoke for itself. In a previous brief I had designed a typeface I called 'Building Blocks', which was based on Times New Roman, a classic font which has been used for decades.
The design I had was intended as a contemporary and modernised version of Times New Roman, and I though it would be in keeping with the theme of tradition.

I started to experiment with some layouts and abbreviations of Cannes Film Festival 2015 using this type.

The type I chose for 'Film Festival' is GeoSans Light, as I felt it balanced out the serif in Building Blocks, and the business of the lines and angles.

I chose to use the logo above, as to me it's the most versatile and in different contexts could be used in a variety of ways, for example, the logos shown in numbers 12-14.

After thinking further about the brief through these experiments, I concluded that I would like to put together an 'invitation pack', including a program, tickets to special viewings, posters for both the festival and a selection of the films, an invitation and a publication reading into some of the more highly anticipated films in the competition.
